The head of the Academy of Sciences announced the danger of the Kambar-Ata HPP-1 project
The issue of seismic safety of the Kambar–Ata HPP-1 construction project in Kyrgyzstan was raised at a meeting of the Committee of the Jogorku Kenesh on the fuel and energy complex, reports
His question was answered by the President of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic Kanatbek Abdrakhmatov, who also heads the Institute of Seismology. According to him, earlier, when designing such large facilities, preliminary studies on seismic microdistricting were an obligatory stage. However, as he noted, in the case of the Kambar–Ata HPP-1, such work was not carried out.
The head of the Academy of Sciences expressed concern about the lack of necessary research. He warned that in the event of a strong earthquake, the destruction of the dam of the Kambar–Ata HPP-1 could cause a domino effect, which would lead to the destruction of the downstream HPP “Kambar–Ata-2” and the entire lower cascade of hydroelectric power plants.
Kanatbek Abdrakhmatov also said that the Institute of Seismology “twice wrote a letter to the Ministry of Energy” with a proposal to conduct the necessary research, but the response to these appeals was never received.
As a specialist seismologist, he believes that the site chosen for construction is dangerous. The facility is planned to be built in the gorge between the mountains, and, in his opinion, in the event of strong tremors, the structure may not stand, which creates significant risks for the entire region.
