EDB will support the preparation of feasibility studies for two cascades of HPPs in Kyrgyzstan
The Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) and ORTA ASYA Investment Holding have announced the start of a strategic partnership. The parties signed an agreement on joint work on the preparation of a feasibility study (feasibility study) for the construction project of the Suusamyr-Kokomerensky cascade of hydroelectric power plants in Kyrgyzstan. The EDB will take over the financing of these works.
The projects for the construction of the Suusamyr-Kokomerensky and Kazarmansky cascades of hydroelectric power stations are being implemented by ORTA ASYA Investment Holding on the basis of a previously signed investment agreement with the Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan. It is assumed that these initiatives are of great strategic and economic importance not only for the country, but also for the entire Central Asian region.
The total volume of planned investments in the construction of two cascades exceeds $ 6 billion. It is expected that the launch of new HPPs will increase the installed capacity of the Kyrgyz energy system by more than 50%. This, in turn, will help to cover the growing domestic demand for electricity and create conditions for increasing its exports to neighboring countries.
The hydropower project of the Kazarmansky cascade of the HPP, located in the Jalal-Abad region, includes power plants Alabuga (600 MW), Karabulun-1 (149 MW) and Karabulun-2 (163 MW), with a total investment of $ 3 billion. The project is supported by a 20-year agreement on the purchase of electricity with the National Electric Grid of Kyrgyzstan (NESC), state guarantees, tax benefits and the transfer of facilities after the expiration of their service life
The hydropower project of the Suusamyr-Kokomeren cascade of hydroelectric power plants, located in the Chui and Naryn regions, provides for the construction of Karakol (33 MW), Kokomeren-1 (360 MW) and Kokomeren-2 (912 MW) power plants with a total investment of $ 3,265 billion.
The Eurasian Development Bank has become one of the first international financial organizations to support these energy projects. The initiative to build the Suusamyr-Kokomerensky cascade of hydroelectric power plants is part of a larger investment megaproject of the bank – “Water and Energy Complex of Central Asia”.
