There are plans to build dozens of small hydroelectric power stations in Kyrgyzstan in two years
The Government of Kyrgyzstan has announced plans for a large-scale expansion of the country’s energy capacity in the coming years. Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Adylbek Kasymaliyev spoke about the prospects for the development of the industry during a speech at a meeting of the parliament. According to the official, the authorities intend to significantly increase the number of generating facilities: in 2026 it is planned to build 17 small hydroelectric power stations, and in 2027 the list will be replenished with another 19 new HPPs.

The Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers also summed up the preliminary results of the current work and outlined the next goals. In 2024, the total energy output was increased to 117.8 megawatts. During this period, eight small hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of 48.8 megawatts were put into operation. The plans for 2025 include the launch of nine similar facilities that will give the power system another 49 megawatts.
In addition to the construction of small hydropower plants, work continues on major strategic projects. In particular, the Toktogul HPP has been modernized, with a capacity of 1,440 megawatts, and the hydroelectric units at the Tash-Kumyr HPP are being updated. The most important element of the strategy remains the construction of the Kambar-Ata-1 HPP. As Adylbek Kasymaliyev noted, the implementation of this project, along with the construction of small hydropower plants, is designed to ensure the full energy independence of the republic and create a sustainable base for future generations.
In parallel with the development of infrastructure, energy companies are engaged in updating the material and technical base at their own expense. Last year, 129 units of special equipment were purchased for the needs of the industry, and another 141 units are expected to be delivered in 2025.
