Hydroelectric power station and reservoir in Batken: the Cabinet of Ministers is looking for a designer for Teke Sekirik

During yesterday’s plenary session of the Jogorku Kenesh, representatives of the executive power of Kyrgyzstan reported on the implementation of the Teke Sekirik major infrastructure project in Batken region. The issue of the current status of the project was raised by Deputy Yrysbek Atazhanov during the discussion of draft laws on the republican budget. The parliamentarian was interested in the stage of preparation for the construction of a strategic facility.

Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Bakyt Torobayev said that at the moment specialists have already prepared a technical and economic calculation. In his response, the official paid special attention to the energy component of the initiative. According to him, the scope of the plan goes beyond the exclusively irrigation tasks: the project involves the construction of not only a reservoir for the needs of agriculture, but also a hydroelectric power station. It is planned that the creation of a powerful waterworks will allow to put into circulation and provide electricity and water to about 16 thousand hectares of land.

Despite the readiness of preliminary calculations, the transition to the active implementation phase faces organizational difficulties. Bakyt Torobayev noted that the state provided financing in the amount of 50 million soms for the development of a detailed project. However, as the Deputy chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers emphasized, it has not yet been possible to find a qualified designer who is ready to take on such a complex and large object. The search for a contractor to create technical documentation continues.

The Teke Sekirik project is considered by the authorities as a key driver of the socio-economic development of the Batken region. According to the Water Resources Service of Kyrgyzstan, the creation of a network of hydraulic structures, including irrigation canals, dams and hydroelectric power stations, is aimed at the integrated development of new territories and the creation of jobs in the region. The total cost of the project, according to rough estimates, is about 30 billion soms.
