Geotextile will protect irrigation canals in Kazakhstan from water losses
The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, together with the German company HUESKER, has started developing a project to introduce modern geotextile materials. The new technology will be applied to irrigation canals in order to reduce irrigation water losses. The parties intend to scale up the use of innovative coatings in the hydraulic engineering construction of the country, the press service of the ministry reports.

The basis for the expansion of cooperation was the positive results of the pilot launch of the technology on the Utemis channel in the Bayzak district of the Zhambyl region. A specialized INCOMAT coating was used at this facility. During tests in real climatic and operational conditions, the material demonstrated the stability of its characteristics. Specialists managed to record a decrease in inappropriate water consumption, as well as an increase in the overall efficiency of water resources management at the site.
Successful experience in the Zhambyl region has confirmed the expediency of further use of this technology in other areas of the irrigation network of the republic. As noted by the commercial director of HUESKER Stefan Westhus, the interaction with the relevant ministry and Kazakh partners has been going on for two years. During this period, the proposed engineering solutions have passed all the necessary checks.
The representative of the German company stressed that after the successful completion of the pilot phase, the specialists moved on to the development of a larger project. Its main task is to demonstrate that the company’s technologies in the field of hydraulic engineering construction are applicable and effective at large infrastructure facilities. The introduction of geotextile is considered as one of the effective methods of modernization of the water management system of Kazakhstan.
