Almaty Region to Add 14.5 MW Through New Small Hydropower Projects

Two small hydroelectric power projects with a total capacity of approximately 14.5 megawatts (MW) are currently under development in the Kegen district of the Almaty region. The construction of these facilities is intended to reduce the electricity deficit in the area, which is experiencing growth in both industrial and tourism activities.

The first project is being developed by KegenHydro in the village of Algabas. This station will have an installed capacity of 4.5 MW and represents an investment of 13.6 billion tenge. Earthworks at the site have been completed, and the project is now transitioning to the reinforcement of the water canal and the construction of the power plant building.

A second facility in Algabas is being implemented by OsirisEnergo. The company plans to invest 11 billion tenge into the project, which will feature an installed capacity of 10.01 MW. Together, these two initiatives provide a total capacity of 14.51 MW – with a combined investment of 24.6 billion tenge.

Almaty Regional Governor Marat Sultangaziyev has directed investors to hire local residents for construction work. He also highlighted the importance of establishing professional training opportunities for youth in the region to ensure they can participate in these infrastructure developments.
