Preparations for floods continue in Kazakhstan

In preparation for the flood period, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan has surveyed more than one and a half thousand reservoirs throughout the country and continues work on cleaning and repairing problem areas, the press service of the department reports.

The branch of “Kazvodkhoz” “The Big Almaty Canal named after D.Konaev” conducts mechanical cleaning of sections with a total length of 10 km from the PK1210 canal to the PK1311 canal. Action plans for accident-free passage of flood waters are also being developed and approved. The necessary volume of free tanks in reservoirs for accumulation of flood waters is provided.

In addition, 1.53 km of the highway of the Grand Almaty Canal is being reconstructed.

The branch of “Kazvodkhoz” in Akmola region carried out the repair of closures at the Seletinsky reservoir. The repair of closures at the Kenbidai hydroelectric complex and the repair of the lower reaches at the Chaglin reservoir have also been completed.

A multifactorial survey was carried out at the Podlesnensky and Koyandinsky reservoirs, as well as at the Aydabulskaya, Shchuchinsky Dachas and Alekseevskaya dams.

This year, basin inspections of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, together with the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan and local executive bodies, conducted a survey of 1502 hydraulic structures throughout the country.

The work was carried out to prepare for the flood period. Based on the results of inspections, the owners of a number of hydraulic structures were given recommendations on how to eliminate the identified shortcomings.

There are 8 basin inspections in Kazakhstan: Aral-Syrdarya, Balkhash-Alakol, Yertis, Yesil, Zhaiyk-Caspian, Nura-Sarysu, Tobol-Torgai and Shu-Talas.

“All reservoirs operate according to the approved schedule, which will be adjusted depending on future forecasts. In order to provide free volumes for receiving spring floods, water is being discharged from reservoirs in the north, west, east and center of the country. Reservoirs in the south of Kazakhstan continue to operate in the accumulation mode,” Acting Chairman of the Committee on Regulation, Protection and Use of Water Resources Gulmira Imasheva said.
