The first hydroelectric power station from the cascade was put into operation on the Naryn River
The first power facility of the Naryn cascade of hydroelectric power plants has been commissioned in the Namangan region of Uzbekistan. The start of the construction of new power plants in the region was given by the country’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on March 25 last year. The Head of State visited the new facility as part of his trip to the region.
The project of construction of a cascade of six hydroelectric power stations on the Naryn River is being implemented by Uzbekhydroenergo Joint Stock Company. The total cost of the project exceeds $ 428 million, and the total capacity of all stations will be 228 megawatts. The first launched facility was HPP-1, which is notable for the fact that it was built entirely from domestic materials and based on local equipment, which made it possible to call it the first national hydroelectric power station.
The capacity of HPP-1 allows generating 171 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. 130 new jobs have been created at the station. The launch of the facility will provide electricity to 430 thousand households and will allow saving 290 million cubic meters of natural gas annually, which in monetary terms is about 300 billion soums, the authorities say.
For the first time in the history of Uzbekistan’s hydropower industry, horizontal capsule hydroelectric units have been used at the new HPP. This technology is highly efficient even at low water pressure, which opens up new prospects for the industry in the country. A spillway structure, administrative buildings and a control room have also been erected on the territory of the station. As part of the landscaping project, 6 thousand ornamental trees were planted, and another 7 thousand fruit tree seedlings are planned to be planted in the spring. It is expected that the facility can also become a center of eco-tourism.
The Naryn cascade HPP is a strategic project aimed at developing the “green” economy of Uzbekistan. The launch of the second and third stations of the cascade is scheduled for 2026, and the rest for 2027. Each of the subsequent HPPs will have a capacity of 38 megawatts.
