The Orto-Tokoy reservoir was drained for the construction of a hydroelectric power station

The Orto-Tokoy reservoir, located on the boundary of the Issyk-Kul and Naryn regions of Kyrgyzstan, has almost completely lost water. The footage taken by eyewitnesses shows that in place of the usual water surface there is now a desert landscape with sand dunes and small scattered ponds.

The current situation is not related to natural anomalies or drought. As explained to Kaktus.media in the country’s Water Resources Service, the drainage of the reservoir is a temporary and controlled measure. This is necessary for carrying out construction work on the construction of a new hydroelectric power station.

According to official information, all the water entering the reservoir from the Kochkor district does not accumulate, but is immediately discharged further along the riverbed. For this purpose, cone valves – special dam mechanisms that regulate the flow – are maintained in a fully open state. This mode of operation will be maintained for the time required to complete the construction work.
