A small hydroelectric power station will be built at the Kargalinsky reservoir in Kazakhstan

Preparations for the reconstruction of the Kargaly reservoir have begun in the Aktobe region of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Aktobe branch of RSE “Kazvodkhoz” together with the Committee of Water Management of the relevant Ministry has started the development of design and estimate documentation. According to the department, it is planned to be completed in the spring of 2025. Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov was informed about the progress of the work, the press service of the ministry reports.

Construction and installation works at the facility are scheduled for 2026, after the project passes the state examination. During the reconstruction, the outdated mechanisms will be completely replaced, some of which have been in operation for about 50 years. The project also provides for the construction of a small hydroelectric power station, which will generate electricity for the needs of the hydraulic structure itself. Surplus electricity is supposed to be sold to local enterprises and nearby settlements.

According to Rinat Shauenov, director of Aktobe branch of RSE “Kazvodkhoz”, this project will be the final stage in the comprehensive work on the renovation of the three largest reservoirs in the region. He recalled that last year the first reconstruction of the Aktobe reservoir on the Ilek River in 36 years was carried out, and the overhaul of the Sazdinsky reservoir is nearing completion. Shauenov also added that the Kargaly reservoir is currently undergoing ongoing work on laying the access road, concreting the slopes of the dam, replacing lighting and installing additional video cameras, which will be completed by the end of November.

The Kargaly reservoir was put into operation in 1975. The hydraulic structure is capable of holding up to 280 million cubic meters of water and is a strategically important facility for Aktobe region.
