Chinese companies will build more dams on the Pskem River

On January 10, 2025, a delegation headed by the Chairman of the Board of Uzbekhydroenergo Abdugani Sanginov visited the office of the Chinese company China Huaneng Group Co. HongKong, Ltd. (Huaneng) in order to strengthen cooperation and discuss current and future steps of joint work.

China Huaneng Group Co. HongKong, Ltd. is one of the five largest state-owned power generating companies in China, managed by the State Assets Control and Management Commission of the State Council of China. The company is engaged in investments in power generation, construction, operation and sale of electricity, and also ranks 238th in the list of the world’s 500 largest companies.

During the visit, Abdugani Sanginov and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Huaneng Xiang Xueyi discussed the results of current cooperation and outlined tasks for the future.

One of the key issues of the meeting was the discussion of the construction project of the Korngitokai HPP with a capacity of 320 MW, which will be located in the Bostanlyk district of the Tashkent region.

To speed up work on the project, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Uzbekhydroenergo and Huaneng. The parties agreed to speed up the coordination of preliminary documents and financing conditions.

The implementation of this project will significantly strengthen the energy balance of Uzbekistan. In honor of this event, an official ceremony is planned to launch the construction of the Korngitokai HPP on the Pskem River in the Bostanlyk district of the Tashkent region on August 1 of this year. The ceremony will be held at a high level, and by that time all preparatory work will be completed.

The construction of the HPP will be the first large hydropower project in Central Asia with high capacity based on the principles of sustainable development.

After completion of the project, it is planned to annually produce 842 million kWh of electricity, which will provide energy to 281 thousand homes and will save about 228 million m3 of natural gas. This will significantly increase the provision of environmentally friendly energy for the growing population and the developing industry of Uzbekistan, the UzDaily publication reports.

In addition, on March 10, 2025, the construction of the Verkhne-Pskem pumped storage hydro plant, the first in Central Asia, will start in Uzbekistan. This project will be an important step in the development of clean energy and strengthening the national energy system of the country.

The project is being implemented in partnership with China Southern Power Grid International (HK) Co. Ltd. Preparatory work has been completed, and the parties signed an agreement on the joint development of another important facility in the Bostanlyk district of the Tashkent region — the Khojakent PSPP, the construction of which is also scheduled for 2025. Previously, this facility was supposed to be built by the largest power generating company in France, Électricité de France.
