Azerbaijani business is offered to build Dams in Tajikistan
Tajikistan expressed its readiness to actively develop joint projects with Azerbaijan in the strategically important field of hydropower. This proposal, as reported to the Report news agency in the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Tajikistan, was made at the 7th meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation. The meeting of the parties took place in Dushanbe in December 2024, laying the foundation for new areas of partnership.
In particular, the Tajik side has put forward an initiative to consider the possibility of attracting Azerbaijani companies to the construction of small and medium-sized hydropower plants in Tajikistan. The implementation of such projects is considered as a significant contribution of both countries to the development of clean energy and a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The successful implementation of these plans is expected to have a positive impact on the formation of green energy policy throughout the Central Asian region, contributing to environmental sustainability and energy security.
The potential for deepening cooperation between Azerbaijan and Tajikistan is assessed as very significant, and this is not limited only to the field of hydropower. The recent high–level meetings between the leaders of the two states also serve as confirmation of the seriousness of intentions. Tajikistan expresses interest in the implementation of joint projects also in the oil and gas industry, the development of logistics corridors, the strengthening of heavy industry and the active promotion of environmental initiatives. Both countries demonstrate their commitment to the international climate agenda and come up with active proposals in this area.
An important aspect is the upcoming chairmanship of Tajikistan in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in 2025. Within the framework of the approved concept of its chairmanship, Dushanbe intends to focus its efforts on countering climate change, forming an effective national policy in the field of “green economy” and achieving sustainable development goals. This creates an additional platform for Tajik-Azerbaijani cooperation in the environmental and energy spheres.
