Qatar has allocated a loan to Tajikistan for the completion of the Rogun Dam

Qatar has allocated Tajikistan a soft loan of $ 50 million for the implementation of the Rogun Dam construction project, the press service of the Ministry of Finance of Tajikistan reports.

“Qatar provided Tajikistan with a soft loan of $ 50 million for the implementation of the Rogun Dam construction project, the agreement was signed by Finance Minister Fayziddin Kahhorzoda and Director General of the Qatar Development Fund Fahd Hamad Al-Sulaiti,” the statement said.

It is noted that the purpose of the project is to promote national energy security and support the economic development of Tajikistan.

In 2024, the Government of Tajikistan agreed on financing packages with a consortium of multilateral and bilateral partners to cover about 50% of the $6.4 billion needed to complete the Rogun Dam project by 2035. Completion of the Dam began in 2016, more than $ 3 billion has already been invested to put into operation the first two of the six turbines (the third is expected in 2026).

It is assumed that after the completion of the project in 2035, the country’s power generation capacity will grow by more than 50%, which will solve the problem of electricity shortage and export about 60% of generation.

The Rogun Dam is the largest hydropower facility in Tajikistan with a design dam height of 335 meters, it should become the tallest in the world. The hydroelectric power plant is being built 110 kilometers east of Dushanbe. It is expected that after the Dam is fully commissioned, the annual volume of electricity generation will exceed 14.5 billion kilowatt-hours.

Six units with a capacity of 630 megawatts each will be installed in the engine room of the station, two turbines are currently operating at the station, commissioned in 2018 and 2019, the launch of the last unit is expected in 2029.

According to the Ministry of Energy of Tajikistan, in 2024 the Rogun Dam generated 1.220 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, which is 5.5% of the total electricity generated in the republic.
