All hydroelectric units of the Rogun Dam are promised to be launched in 2029
Tajikistan continues to build a key infrastructure project — the Rogun Hydroelectric Power Station (Dam), which will become the largest in Central Asia. According to the press secretary of the Barki Tojik energy holding, Nozirjon Yedgori, the last unit of the station will be put into operation in 2029, and the reservoir is expected to be fully filled by 2036.
According to Yedgori, Tajikistan’s hydropower potential is four times higher than the volume of electricity consumption in Central Asian countries. The construction of Rogun will generate more than 34 billion kWh of electricity per year, which will make Tajikistan a key supplier of environmentally friendly energy in the region.
“We have already signed agreements with Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan on the supply of electricity from the Rogun Dam. Moreover, the station will extend the service life of downstream power plants, such as Nurek, by 100 years,” said the representative of Barka Tojik.
The economic effect of Rogun’s work also promises to be significant: the annual cost of electricity produced, based on the world average price of 6 cents per kWh, can reach up to $ 70 million.
In addition to energy benefits, the construction of the Rogun Dam reservoir will create new opportunities for agriculture. 360 thousand hectares of new arable land will be opened, and the provision of irrigation systems in the Amu Darya River basin will increase by 4.3 million hectares.
It should be noted that the construction of the Rogun Dam began in 1987, but the project was frozen in the 1990s due to the collapse of the USSR and the civil war. They returned to construction in the 2000s, despite the need for significant investments. President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon in a recent address to parliament said that the third unit of the Dam will be launched in 2025, and the country will switch to alternative fuel sources by 2037.
