ADB will allocate $300 million for the construction of Kambar-Ata HPP-1

The President of the Asian Development Bank, Masato Kanda, announced the strategic plans of the financial institution during a briefing held in Bishkek on November 20 following the 24th Ministerial Conference of the Central Asian Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC). The key statement was the ADB’s intention to invest $10 billion in improving the connectivity of the CAREC region in the period up to 2030.

The head of the bank dwelt in detail on the current portfolio of projects and prospects for cooperation with the Kyrgyz Republic in the coming years. According to Masato Kanda, ADB retains the status of a leading partner in the implementation of large-scale infrastructure initiatives in Kyrgyzstan. Particular attention is paid to the energy sector, in particular the construction of the Kambar-Ata HPP-1. As part of the support of this strategic facility, the bank plans to provide financing in the amount of $ 300 million. The funds will be allocated in stages, with the transfer of a tranche in the amount of $ 140 million envisaged at the initial stage.

In addition to large hydraulic structures, the ADB President announced his readiness to support Kyrgyzstan in the development of alternative energy sources. We are talking about the introduction of renewable energy technologies, including floating hydroelectric power projects, as well as measures to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. These steps are designed to diversify the country’s energy balance and increase the sector’s resilience to external challenges.

The Kambar-Ata HPP-1 project, which will become the flagship of the country’s hydropower industry, will be implemented in Toktogul district on the Naryn River. The dam will be located about nine kilometers upstream from the already operating second station of the cascade and 75 kilometers from the Toktogul HPP. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan, the cost of constructing the facility is estimated at $ 3.5 billion.

According to SMEC calculations, the installed capacity of the new hydroelectric power plant will be 1880 MW. It is expected that the average annual electricity generation will reach about 6 billion kWh, which will increase the total volume of generation in the country by more than a third of the current figures. The project provides for the construction of a dam with a height of 260.8 meters, which will form a reservoir with a total volume of 5.4 billion cubic meters.
