President: the third unit of the Rogun Dam will be launched in September 2027

President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, during his address to the Parliament, outlined the deadlines for achieving full energy independence of the republic. The key event will be the commissioning of the third unit of the Rogun Dam, scheduled for September 2027. The launch of this facility, according to the president, will allow the country to fully meet its electricity needs and overcome the existing energy deficit.

As Emomali Rahmon pointed out, large-scale investments exceeding 60 billion somoni have been directed to the energy sector of Tajikistan over the past decade. Thanks to these investments, the production capacity of the power system has increased by 1,017 megawatts. A significant contribution was made by the modernization of the existing infrastructure, which made it possible to increase generation by 200 megawatts. It is expected that by the end of 2025, electricity generation will reach 24.2 billion kilowatt-hours, which is significantly higher than in 2015, which was 17.2 billion.

The Head of State also commented on the situation with temporary power outages. The current deficit is due to a number of objective reasons: population growth, the introduction of new industrial enterprises and an increase in total consumption. The situation was aggravated by natural factors – a small amount of precipitation last autumn and a decrease in the inflow of water into the reservoirs of hydroelectric power plants.

To stabilize the energy balance, the Government of Tajikistan is implementing projects to diversify energy sources. Currently, design and construction work has already begun on the construction of two solar power plants with a total capacity of 500 megawatts. Commissioning of these facilities is scheduled for August 2026.
