The construction of two reservoirs is being completed in the Turkestan region
In the Turkestan region of the Republic of Kazakhstan, work is actively underway to erect new hydraulic structures designed to solve the problem of irrigation water shortage in the region. We are talking about the construction of two significant facilities – the Baidibek-ata and Karakuys reservoirs. The implementation of these large-scale projects will allow to accumulate flood effluents and effectively use them for the needs of agriculture in dry periods, the press service of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan reports.

The largest facility is being built in the Baydibek district. The Baidibek-ata reservoir with a design capacity of 68 million cubic meters is being built on a plot of 860 hectares located at the confluence of the Balabogen and Ulken-Bogen rivers. The engineering structure includes a dam with a length of 1.75 kilometers and a height of 26 meters. The main function of the reservoir is to collect water during spring floods, followed by redirecting additional volumes to the Bogenskoye reservoir during the growing season. At the moment, the construction readiness of the facility is estimated by specialists at 75%.
To transport water resources between reservoirs, the Sarkyrama canal is being laid. This waterway with a length of 21.7 kilometers will connect the new reservoir with the Bogensky reservoir. The canal is designed to pass up to 12 cubic meters of water per second, which will provide 2.5 thousand hectares of irrigated land with moisture. The builders have already completed the bulk of the work, completing the laying of the channel on a section about 21 kilometers long.
At the same time, the construction of the second facility, the Karakuys reservoir with a volume of 1.2 million cubic meters, is nearing completion in the Tolebi district of the region. Construction and installation works have already been completed by 90% here. The commissioning of this waterworks guarantees a stable supply of irrigation water to 500 hectares of agricultural land, which will be a significant support for local farmers.
“All work is carried out in accordance with modern quality standards. The new reservoirs will ensure the efficient use of flood and meltwater, which is especially important in conditions of dwindling water resources. There will be an opportunity to develop additional irrigated areas, as well as to ensure safe regulation of the water level in the Bogensky reservoir. Conditions for the development of agriculture, fisheries, livestock and tourism will improve. So, according to hydrological calculations, the average annual inflow along the Bogen River reaches 165 million cubic meters. Therefore, it is important to collect this water and direct it to the needs of citizens,” said Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurzhan Nurzhigitov.
