Parallel reconstruction of two hydroelectric units will be carried out at the Uch-Kurgan HPP

Kyrgyzstan continues to implement a large-scale program to upgrade the country’s generating capacities. In pursuance of the instruction of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic aimed at increasing electricity generation, the modernization project of the Uch-Kurgan HPP is progressing at an active pace. The work within the Package-2 is carried out by the general contractor – CNEEC (China National Electric Engineering Co. Ltd.) from the People’s Republic of China, Gidropost reports.

The key feature of the upcoming stage will be the optimization of the work schedule. A parallel reconstruction of two hydroelectric units of the station – No. 2 and No. 1 – is planned for 2026. Such a technical solution will significantly reduce the time of modernization and increase the overall efficiency of the project. Preparatory and engineering activities for both nodes have already started.

According to the approved plan, the direct reconstruction of hydroelectric unit No. 2 will begin on February 1, 2026. A month later, on March 1, 2026, specialists will begin work on hydraulic unit No. 1. Currently, the second unit is already welding the stator rods and assembling the rotor spokes, accompanied by the necessary flaw detection. Simultaneously with these processes, design and technical preparation for the first unit is underway.

The Ministry of Energy of the Kyrgyz Republic emphasizes that all activities are carried out in strict accordance with the schedule, technical regulations and industrial safety standards. The parallel reconstruction strategy is designed to ensure a phased increase in the plant’s production performance. By the end of 2025, as a result of the work carried out, the capacity of the Uch-Kurgan HPP has already increased by 18 MW, and the completion of the 2026 stage will provide a total increase in installed capacity of 36 MW.

The comprehensive modernization of the Uch-Kurgan HPP is aimed not only at increasing the volume of generation, but also at improving the reliability of hydropower equipment. The upgrade of key nodes should ensure sustainable, safe and long-term operation of the hydroelectric power plant.
