Tajikistan Secures AED 376M Loan for Rogun Hydropower Plant

The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has finalized a loan agreement with the Republic of Tajikistan to support the construction of the Rogun Hydropower Plant. The financing, amounting to 376 million UAE dirhams, is provided through the Abu Dhabi Global Water Platform, an initiative launched by the fund in the preceding month. This funding aims to enhance energy security and support climate-focused development as part of the UAE’s efforts to promote sustainable infrastructure in partner nations.

The agreement was signed by Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of the ADFD, and Fayziddin Qahhorzoda, Tajikistan’s Minister of Finance, during the World Government Summit. The cooperation highlights the ADFD’s role in global development and advances the strategic objectives of the Abu Dhabi Global Water Platform–an initiative that positions water challenges as a key international priority and a component of a sustainable future.

The Rogun Hydropower Plant is designed to provide a sustainable and affordable electricity supply to meet rapidly growing domestic demand. The project is also expected to facilitate the expansion of regional electricity trade and provide Tajikistan with an additional mechanism for balancing power grids within the integrated energy systems of Central Asia. The financing supports Tajikistan’s national development goals through high-impact projects intended to foster economic progress.
