Local residents are concerned about the construction of a dam on the Koksu River
In the Zhetysu region of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a discussion was held on the construction of a hydroelectric power station (HPP) on the Koksu River. The opinions of local residents were divided.
In the Kerbulak district of the Zhetysu region, a meeting was held with residents about the construction of the Rudnichnaya HPP. The opinions of the residents of the village of Rudnichny were divided. One group objected to the project, stating that “there is no guarantee of safety and environmental friendliness.” Another group argued that the construction would create new jobs and opportunities. And activists in the region are worried that the construction of a hydroelectric power station could lead to the death of the Koksu River.
— Why are we raising this issue and expressing dissatisfaction? Villagers held online hearings. But no one heard or knew about it. It was only after the uproar on social media arose that we organized a meeting today. And now, according to the state plan, they want to build 10 hydroelectric power stations on this small, only 200 kilometers long stretch of the river. If all these stations are built, what will be left of the river? A reservoir will be created that will collect water. Rafting people are promised that the river flow will be preserved. But how will it be implemented? — said environmental activist Aliya Akhmedieva.
Responsible construction specialists say that the concerns of local residents have no reason.
— We will not build a huge dam, but only a reservoir. The construction will be carried out by a Chinese team of qualified specialists. Neither the vegetation on the shore nor the fish in the river will be harmed. Also, the construction will not interfere with the organization of rafting on the Koksu River. We will accept 500 workers, and after the launch of the HPP, 50 permanent jobs will be opened,” said Ali Karabalin, a specialist responsible for the project.
When local residents complained that they would not be able to get to the recreation area or cemetery, Karabalin promised that a solution would be found.
Earlier, activists of the Zhetysu region have already expressed their concerns about this project.
