Kazakhstan will receive 11 billion cubic meters of water from Central Asian countries
Kazakhstan will receive about 11 billion cubic meters of water through the Syrdarya River by April next year. Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurzhan Nurzhigitov agreed on this with representatives of Central Asian countries. He represented the interests of the country at the 87th meeting of the Interstate Coordination Water Management Commission (ICWC). The meeting was held in Ashgabat (Turkmenistan).
The meeting was also attended by the heads of water departments of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The Kyrgyz side acted as an observer.
Thus, by April 1, 11 billion cubic meters of water are expected to flow into the Shardara reservoir. This will allow to accumulate the necessary amount of water for the irrigation season of 2025 in the southern part of the country.
In addition, the meeting participants approved forecast schedules for the operation of reservoirs in the basins of the Syrdarya and Amu Darya rivers, as well as water supply limits for Central Asian countries for the autumn-winter period of 2024-2025.
“This year, thanks to negotiations and joint actions, we have ensured efficient water distribution in the Syrdarya River basin. I would also like to positively note the joint work done following the results of the 86th meeting. In particular, agreements on water and energy cooperation with Kyrgyzstan were implemented, and measures were taken to coordinate the operation of the Bahri-Tojik reservoir during the irrigation period of this year,” said Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurzhan Nurzhigitov.
The next, 88th meeting of the ICWC will be held in the first quarter of 2025 in Dushanbe, the press service of the Kazakh Ministry reports.
