Construction of Orto-Tokoyskaya HPP continues in Kyrgyzstan

The construction of the Orto-Tokoy hydroelectric power station, a strategically important facility for the country’s energy system, is gaining momentum in Kyrgyzstan. The Ministry of Energy of the Kyrgyz Republic reports that work at the facility located near the town of Balykchy, near the Orto-Tokoy reservoir, is being carried out in an active mode. This project, implemented by Chakan HPP OJSC, is designed not only to increase electricity generation, but also to increase the stability of the region’s energy supply.

To date, a significant amount of work has already been done. In particular, as the Ministry of Energy notes, a town for builders has been erected, providing comfortable living conditions for specialists involved in the facility. Also, the necessary storage facilities for the storage of building materials and equipment have been built, which allows optimizing logistics and ensuring an uninterrupted construction process. In addition, mortar-concrete units, compensatory structures and power supply systems are functioning, creating the necessary infrastructure for the implementation of the project.

Special attention is paid to the safety and reliability of the future hydraulic engineering structure. The Ministry of Energy emphasizes that work has been carried out to strengthen the soil, which will prevent possible collapses and ensure the stability of the structure. For the convenience of transportation of materials and equipment, both temporary and permanent access roads to various construction sites are equipped.

Currently, the main efforts of builders are focused on the key stages of the construction of hydroelectric power plants. According to the Ministry of Energy, the development of the foundation pit of the HPP building has been completed by 10%, while 50 thousand cubic meters of soil have already been extracted. At the same time, a water–carrying derivation tunnel with a diameter of 5.4 meters is being drilled – 312 meters of the planned 771 have been laid. This tunnel will become an important artery providing water supply to the turbines of the hydroelectric power station. In parallel, the necessary equipment is being supplied, in particular, suction tube cones for three units have already been delivered. A road to the water intake is also being built through the crest of the dam, which will provide access to one of the most important elements of the waterworks.

The design capacity of the Orto-Tokoyskaya HPP is 21 MW, and the average annual electricity generation, according to the Ministry of Energy, will reach 75 million kWh. The general contractor of the construction is the Chinese company CHMC (China National Heavy Machinery Corporation), which has extensive experience in implementing such projects. The construction of the HPP began in the summer of 2024, and the completion and commissioning of the facility are scheduled for the first half of 2026.
