The Chinese company CNEEC has started the modernization of the Uch-Kurgan HPP
The Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan announces the start of work on the modernization of the Uch-Kurgan HPP. On March 11, 2025, the station officially launched the reconstruction of the hydroelectric unit No.3. The contractor is the Chinese company CNEEC (China National Electric Engineering Co. Ltd.).
At the moment, CNEEC specialists are dismantling the equipment of hydraulic unit No. 3. This was preceded by a set of preparatory works.
The Uch-Kurgan HPP, commissioned in 1962, is equipped with four hydroelectric units, the initial capacity of each of which was 45 MW. In 2024, the reconstruction project of hydroelectric unit No. 4 was successfully completed, as a result of which its capacity increased by 9 MW. A similar increase in capacity by 9 MW is expected after the modernization of hydroelectric unit No. 3.
At the time of the reconstruction of the third hydroelectric unit, the total capacity of the Uch-Kurgan HPP is 144 MW. It is important to note that since the launch of the station in 1962, the hydraulic units have never been overhauled or modernized.
The completion of the reconstruction of hydroelectric unit No. 3 and its commissioning with increased capacity are scheduled for November 2025. The project of modernization of the Uch-Kurgan HPP, as indicated in the Ministry of Energy, is important for the energy system of Kyrgyzstan, allowing to increase electricity generation and increase the reliability of energy supply.
