The European Investment Bank will evaluate the Rogun Dam project
The European Investment Bank (EIB) has decided to start the evaluation process of the Rogun Hydroelectric Power Plant (Dam) construction project in Tajikistan. This was announced by the European Commissioner for International Partnerships Josef Sikela on his page in the social network X. His statement leads Trend.
Josef Sikela and representatives of the EIB visited the Rogun Dam, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister of Tajikistan Usmonali Usmonzoda, responsible for the implementation of the project. The visit took place as part of the European Commissioner’s trip to Central Asia.
Josef Sikela said that the construction of the Dam is supported by loans from a group of international development banks, and the European Investment Bank is also seriously considering the possibility of participation. He noted that EIB representatives were present during the visit to the facility, and now the bank has decided to start the project evaluation process.
The European Commissioner stressed that the shareholders of the EIB are the EU member states. The Bank carefully evaluates all projects and supports only those that are economically sustainable. Thus, the bank ensures the repayment of its loans with interest, while maintaining strict control over its own funds or attracted through bonds and other financial instruments.
Josef Sikela also noted that the European Union supports the project, which is highly appreciated by both local stakeholders and European companies competing for contracts. Many of them have already made significant progress in this direction.
The European Commissioner added that at the moment, about 17,000 people from around the world are involved in the construction of the Rogun Dam. According to him, after the completion of the construction, the Rogun Dam will become the highest in the world, reaching a mark of about 335 meters. The capacity of the hydroelectric power plant will be 3.6 gigawatts, which exceeds the performance of any operating power plant in Europe. The project will almost double the annual electricity generation in Tajikistan.
Sikela also noted that the Rogun Dam will significantly improve the country’s water resources management system and strengthen regional agriculture.
