Authorities Halt Massive Illegal Gold Mining Operation in East Kazakhstan

Authorities in East Kazakhstan have halted a large-scale illegal gold mining operation that involved the diversion of a local river into a new channel. Heavy machinery significantly altered the landscape in the Markakol district near the village of Akbulak – the excavation area covered approximately 30 hectares.

To provide water for gold-washing complexes, operators unauthorizedly changed the local hydrological regime. The riverbed was diverted from its natural boundaries, leading to the destruction of the shoreline and direct interference with the aquatic ecosystem. Continuous excavation and the regular discharge of waste rock caused severe water pollution, while the surrounding area was stripped of fertile topsoil. The natural terrain has been transformed into industrial spoil heaps.

A special operation to shut down the mine was conducted by the regional department of the Financial Monitoring Agency, in coordination with the local National Security Committee and the specialized environmental prosecutor’s office. Investigators at the site identified a fully functioning mining enterprise. Law enforcement officials seized six 40-ton quarry dump trucks, four tracked excavators, a front-end loader, and two processing complexes designed to extract precious metals from ore.

More than 30 individuals, including citizens of the People’s Republic of China, were found operating the machinery and processing the gold. Relevant agencies are currently assessing the exact financial cost of the damage to the river and the surrounding environment. Authorities are also investigating the distribution channels for the illicitly obtained metal. Further details regarding the criminal case remain confidential as the investigation continues.
