Reconstruction of Toktogul hydroelectric power station reaches the finish line

One of the key and most technically difficult stages of large—scale modernization has been completed at the Toktogul hydroelectric power station in Kyrgyzstan – the installation of the rotor in the generator shaft of the fourth and last hydroelectric unit No. 3. This unique operation marks the entry into the finish line in the renovation project of the country’s largest power plant, according to the Ministry of Energy of the Republic.

The heart of the hydraulic unit, the rotor weighing 768 tons, was installed with jewel-like precision in its place with the help of two overhead cranes, each of which is capable of lifting up to 400 tons. A task of similar complexity and scale was performed at the station only once — half a century ago, during its construction. Today’s event, carried out with the use of modern technologies, opens a new page in the history of Kyrgyz energy.

The reconstruction of the final hydroelectric unit is in full swing and is at the final stage. At the moment, the rotor assembly is fully completed, the stator is 95 percent ready, and the turbine assembly is 72.3 percent complete. The overall progress in replacing the entire hydroelectric unit is more than 70 percent, which confirms the high pace of project implementation.

The complete completion of the reconstruction, scheduled for November 2025, will bring Kyrgyzstan a tangible increase in energy security. The modernization of four hydroelectric units will increase the installed capacity of the Toktogul HPP by 240 megawatts, bringing it to 1,440 megawatts.
