European technologies helped in the modernization of the Kairakkum Dam
A large–scale project to upgrade the Kairakkum hydroelectric power station, one of the key facilities of the country’s energy infrastructure, continues in the Sughd region of Tajikistan. The progress of work on the modernization and installation of modern equipment was inspected by the head of the region, Rajabboy Ahmadzoda, the press service of the regional administration reports.
The Kairakkum Dam, consisting of six hydroelectric units, is an important link in the republic’s energy system. The last of its units was commissioned back in 1957 with a design capacity of 21 MW. Over 68 years of service, the main equipment of the station has become physically and morally obsolete, which has led to a significant reduction in production capacity – up to 12 MW per unit.
The comprehensive modernization program was launched in 2019 with the support of the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon. Over the past five years, it has been possible to completely upgrade three hydroelectric units – No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6. As a result of the work carried out, the capacity of each of them increased from 19 to 29 MW, which significantly increased the total electricity generation.
Both local and foreign specialists, as well as development partners, took part in the implementation of the project. The key equipment for the plant, including components for the engine room, turbine control systems, excitation system transformers and modern monitoring and control systems, was purchased and supplied from leading European countries.
An important stage of modernization was the replacement of an open switchgear with a voltage of 220/110 kV with a modern closed gas switchgear. The new system significantly improves operational safety and efficiency of electricity transmission to consumers.
The head of the Sughd region gave a positive assessment of the progress of the project. He instructed the responsible persons to ensure the high quality of all remaining works and to make the most effective use of the capabilities of the new installed equipment for stable energy supply to the region.
