AIIB increased funding for Rogun Dam by $70 million
The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has decided to increase the financing of the Rogun Dam from $ 430 million to $ 500 million following a meeting between Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and AIIB President Jing Lijun in Tianjin as part of a meeting of the Council of Heads of SCO member states, the press service of the head of state reports.
“The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank has decided to increase the financing of the Rogun Dam to $ 500 million, already participating in the implementation of four investment projects in Tajikistan totaling more than $ 430 million, including the construction of the Rogun Dam and a 920—meter-long road bridge in Nurabad district, near the hydroelectric complex,” the report said.
The parties discussed the possibilities of cooperation in the field of green energy, including the construction and modernization of power plants of various capacities, as well as the commissioning of solar and wind turbines.
The financial support of the bank was recognized as necessary for the implementation of projects in the field of water resources management, reducing the risks of floods and landslides, as well as attracting modern control and monitoring technologies.
In 2024, the Government of Tajikistan agreed on financing packages with a consortium of multilateral and bilateral partners to cover about 50% of the $6.4 billion needed to complete the project by 2035. Completion of the Rogun Dam began in 2016, more than $ 3 billion has already been invested to put into operation the first two of the six turbines (the third is expected in 2026).
