The EBRD will support the construction of the Kambar-Ata HPP-1 in Central Asia
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is stepping up its participation in the construction of the Kambar-Ata HPP–1, one of the largest energy projects in Central Asia. The station will be located on the Naryn River in Kyrgyzstan and will become an important element of the regional energy system, EnergoMedia news agency reports.
On the sidelines of the Global Gateway Forum in Brussels, memorandums of understanding were signed between the EBRD and the governments of the three countries participating in the project: Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The Forum, organized by the European Union, serves as a platform for attracting investments in key infrastructure projects within the framework of the EU’s Global Gateway initiative.
The signing ceremony was attended by EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso and the heads of the bank’s specialized departments. On the part of the states, the documents were signed by the Minister of Energy of Kyrgyzstan Taalaibek Ibrayev, the Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan Yerlan Akkenzhanov and the Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov. These agreements form the basis for accelerating the preparation and subsequent implementation of the project.
The high level of attention to the project from Europe was underlined by the presence at the event of the President of the European Investment Bank Nadia Calvinho and EU Commissioner for International Partnership Josef Sikela. Their participation testifies to the interest of European structures in strengthening energy integration in the Central Asian region.
Kambar-Ata HPP-1 is being implemented in the format of a trilateral joint venture. The project is of strategic importance not only for power generation, but also for strengthening the water security of the entire region. Joint management of Naryn River water resources is a key aspect of cooperation between the three countries.
It is planned that the future station will be equipped with four turbines with a total capacity of 1860 MW. The expected annual electricity generation will be about 5.6 billion kWh. The implementation of the project will allow Kyrgyzstan to significantly increase its export potential, as well as create conditions for irrigation of new agricultural land, which is important for the agricultural sector of the region.
