South Korea may build a cascade of hydroelectric power plants in the south-east of Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan and South Korea are discussing the prospects of joint construction of hydroelectric power plants. A representative delegation from Kazakhstan visited the Republic of Korea on a working visit, the main purpose of which was to explore opportunities for the implementation of new projects in the field of hydropower. The delegation included Vice Minister of Energy Sungat Yessimkhanov and Director General of the KAZENERGY Association Zhandos Nurmaganbetov, the press service of the Ministry of Energy reports.
The trip was organized with the assistance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and was aimed at improving competencies in managing hydropower assets. In the South Korean city of Daejeon, Kazakhstani specialists took part in a technical program prepared by the Korean Water Resources Corporation K-water. During the program, issues of water resource policy, modern technologies used in hydropower, as well as approaches to financing and implementation of medium-sized HPP projects were considered.
For practical familiarization with the Korean experience, trips were organized to the K-water Integrated Water Resources Management Center and the Daejeon multipurpose Dam. These facilities demonstrate modern approaches to water resources management and operation of hydraulic structures.
The key part of the visit was negotiations with leading energy and infrastructure companies in South Korea, including Korea Midland Power Co., Ltd. (KOMIPO), Korea South-East Power Co., Ltd. (KOEN), Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (KHNP) and Korea Overseas Infrastructure & Urban Development Corporation (KIND). The central topic of discussion was the possibility of joint implementation of the project for the construction of a cascade of hydroelectric power plants in the south-east of Kazakhstan. The parties considered potential formats of cooperation for the implementation of this major project.
