Rogun Dam: do we sell electricity in summer and buy it in winter?

Tajikistan will supply Kazakhstan with electricity generated at the Rogun Dam, and then purchase the resource from Kazakhstan when there is not enough of its own electricity seasonally, said Igor Yushkov, a leading analyst at the National Energy Security Fund, an expert at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation.

“In the spring or summer Tajikistan will export to Kazakhstan, well, it is assumed that at low prices, because the production at power plants, hydroelectric power plants, it is very cheap, the cost is low. And at other times Kazakhstan will not import, because this electricity will become more expensive,” he says.

Then, the expert notes, on the contrary, Tajikistan will be able to supply its own electricity, because now its electricity will be cheaper.

As a rule, Dushanbe exports electricity precisely during the seasons of oversupply, Yushkov said.

“In spring and summer, when the hydroelectric power station generates more excess electricity, why not sell it?” — He remarked.
Accordingly, the republic will be able to make money on the sale of excess electricity. And then — to buy a resource from Kazakhstan, when there will not be enough of its own electricity seasonally.

As the analyst notes, the main task of the Tajik leadership is to come to the balancing of energy systems, either to agree in the long term to import from neighbors during their energy shortages, or to build some kind of compensating generation.
