Energy limits in Tajikistan: it’s all about Dams

With the arrival of winter, restrictions on the supply of electricity will come into effect in the republic, which will cause difficulties for the people and the national economy, the press service of the Barki Tojik energy holding reports. This measure is inevitable due to the special nature of the country’s energy system.

The blame for everything is the redistribution of water resources. So, according to the representative of the company, in winter every centimeter of water in reservoirs counts.

For example, in the hot season, up to 2 thousand cubic meters of water enter the Nurek reservoir from the Vakhsh River every second. In winter, the water intake is reduced to 100-150 cubic meters per second, and due to the fact that up to 1.2 thousand cubic meters of water are needed for the full operation of the Dam, it is even necessary to use reserve water, that is, a reservoir.

In addition, during the period of independence, the country’s population has doubled — from 5.3 million people in 1991 to 10.2 million people. This also puts a strain on the network.

“Since 2000, the annual volume of housing commissioning has increased from 245 thousand square meters. m to more than 1.5 million square meters. m,” the press service said.

And if before 1991 there were only 358 industrial enterprises with 33 thousand jobs in the republic, now there are more than 3 thousand facilities with 54 thousand jobs in the country.

In this regard, the energy holding appeals to the citizens of Tajikistan with a request to use electricity efficiently, that is, to save it.

The company’s press service gives an example: if each household in Dushanbe uses at least one lamp less per day, then due to the electricity saved from this, it will be possible to provide the entire city with electricity for 10 days.

In addition, Barki Tojik reminds of the need for timely payment of energy bills. The company emphasizes that electricity is a product, and in order for this product to be constantly produced, you need to pay for it.

Recall that possible restrictions on the supply of electricity this year became known with the arrival of autumn — on September 22.

At that time, Barki Tojik explained this by the lack of water supplies for electricity generation and the increased demand for it from the population.
