In 2024, Kyrgyzstan increased electricity generation at small hydropower plants

The Minister of Energy of the Kyrgyz Republic Taalaibek Ibraev spoke about the indicators in the energy sector in 2024. According to him, the country has exceeded the planned targets for hydropower and small hydropower plants. He said this at a briefing in Bishkek.

In 2024, electricity generation amounted to 12.8 billion kilowatt-hours at hydroelectric power plants, 1.8 billion at thermal power plants, as well as 250 million kilowatt-hours at small hydropower plants. At the moment, small hydroelectric power plants produce 400 million kilowatt-hours.

The total energy consumption of Kyrgyzstan in 2024 is expected to reach 17.5 billion kilowatt-hours. To cover the deficit, the country bought it from its neighbors. Thus, 1.13 billion kilowatt-hours were imported from Kazakhstan, 1.7 billion from Turkmenistan (which exceeds the agreed 1.5 billion kilowatt—hours), and 485 million from Uzbekistan, 100 percent of the agreed volume.

The Minister stressed that all the necessary contracts for the import of electricity for 2025 have already been signed.
