Kyrgyzstan Launches 7.5 MW Hydropower Plant on Tuyuk River

A new small hydropower plant on the Tuyuk River in Kyrgyzstan’s Chuy Region began operations on September 12, 2026. The facility – constructed at a cost of 516.1 million soms with financial participation from the State Development Bank – has a capacity of 7.5 megawatts and is expected to generate over 29 million kilowatt-hours annually. This output is sufficient to provide a consistent electricity supply to approximately 15,000 residents in the Issyk-Ata district.

The launch of the hydropower plant was timed to coincide with the nation’s Independence Day. President Sadyr Japarov authorized the start of the turbines via a teleconference that integrated several new industrial and infrastructure sites across the country. The addition of small-scale generating facilities is intended to reduce the regional energy system’s dependence on major suppliers while balancing network loads during periods of peak demand.

Investments in renewable energy sources are directed at addressing multiple local objectives, including the expansion of generating capacity and the reinforcement of regional power supplies. The project further supports the local economy through job creation and the generation of additional tax revenue. The commencement of operations at the Tuyuk River facility marks a development in the domestic energy sector’s infrastructure.
