Tajikistan will prepare a list of projects for the construction of new Dams for the Russian Federation

Russia and Tajikistan have agreed to prepare a list of promising joint projects in the electric power industry, including the construction of hydroelectric power plants and solar power plants. This was announced to TASS by the Minister of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan Daler Juma on the sidelines of the Energoprom International Energy Forum.

“Sergey Evgenievich (Tsivilev, Minister of Energy of Russia) and I have agreed to create a round table literally in the near future to identify [promising for implementation] projects. Our annual potential [for generating electricity at Dams] is estimated at 527 billion kWh, and we use only 5%. Hydropower has historically been the main focus of bilateral cooperation,” he said.

“There is experience, and there are several options that we are going to discuss in the near future. We are also discussing the development of other renewable energy sources, especially solar energy,” the minister added.

He also said that Russia and Tajikistan have settled the issue of electricity debt to the Russian Federation, and a corresponding agreement will be signed in the near future.

The main debt to Russia concerns the joint Russian-Tajik enterprise Sangtudinskaya Dam-1. The share of the Russian Federation in the authorized capital is 75% minus one share, Tajikistan — 25% plus one share.

The only buyer of the electricity produced by the Sangtuda Dam-1 is the state energy holding “Barki tojik”.

The website of the joint venture reports that at the end of December 2024, Barki Tojik’s debt to the Dam exceeded 3.25 billion somoni (almost $298 million).
