The Islamic Development Bank will invest $150 million in the infrastructure of the Rogun Dam
In 2024, Tajikistan and the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) signed an agreement on financing priority projects in the country in the amount of $ 200 million. This is reported by the Trend publication. According to the Ministry of Finance of Tajikistan, this agreement was announced during a consultative meeting of the IDB country office managers in Saudi Medina. The event was attended by Majidi Yusuf Khairullo, First Deputy Minister of Finance of Tajikistan and alternative manager from the country in the IDB.
The main part of the allocated funds — $ 150 million — will be directed to the further development of the infrastructure of the Rogun hydroelectric power Station (Dam). This large-scale project, located on the Vakhsh River, provides for the construction of six power units with a capacity of 600 MW each. At the moment, two units have already been commissioned, and the third is scheduled to be launched in 2025. After the construction is fully completed, the station will generate more than 17 billion kWh of electricity per year, which will significantly strengthen Tajikistan’s energy potential and meet the growing demand for electricity.
The Rogun Dam is considered by the project developers as a key project for the country, since it will provide electricity to almost 10 million people, solving the problem of chronic power outages in winter. In addition, about 70% of the energy generated by the plant will be exported to neighboring Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
