Eight new reservoirs will be built on eight rivers in the Zhetisu region
Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan Nurzhan Nurzhigitov met with local residents in the Zhetisu region. During the visit, plans for the development of water resources in the region aimed at modernizing infrastructure and improving the efficiency of water resources use were presented, the press service of the ministry reports.
As part of the Comprehensive Plan for the development of the water industry in Kazakhstan until 2028, it is planned to build eight new reservoirs. They will appear in Aksu, Koksu, Panfilov, Sarkan, Alakol districts and in the Taldykorgan city area. The new facilities will be located on the rivers Bien, Bije, Khorgos, Usek, Tyshkan, Balykty, Zhamant and Baskan.
In addition to new construction, the program includes a large-scale modernization of existing infrastructure. It is planned to reconstruct three reservoirs and 2,930 kilometers of irrigation canals. An important part of the project will be the automation of 236.8 kilometers of canals, which will allow more accurate control of water supply. Multivariate surveys will also be conducted at 17 hydraulic structures to assess their condition.
“One of the priorities of our work is the repair and modernization of water infrastructure. The large–scale projects implemented today for the construction and reconstruction of hydraulic structures, automation of irrigation networks will significantly increase the efficiency of water use and reduce its losses,” said Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan Nurzhan Nurzhigitov. – The completed growing season has clearly shown that the effectiveness of the agricultural sector largely depends on how competently and responsibly we approach water resources management. This requires not only precise planning, but also a systematic approach to the development of the entire water industry.”
During the meeting, residents of the Zhetisu region asked the Minister questions regarding subsidizing the costs of introducing water-saving technologies and a possible revision of water consumption standards for irrigation of agricultural land. Later, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov held a personal reception of citizens, where the topics of construction of hydroelectric power stations, dams and repair of irrigation canals were discussed.
