Six new reservoirs will be built in the Abay region
The authorities of the Abai region of the Republic of Kazakhstan announced a comprehensive program for the development of the region’s water infrastructure. Within the framework of the republican plan, designed for the period up to 2028, it is planned to build six new reservoirs, as well as the reconstruction of ten hydraulic structures and seventeen irrigation systems. This was announced by the governor of the region Berik Uali during a briefing in the Central Communications Service.
The implementation of these large-scale projects is aimed at significantly improving the water supply of the agricultural sector and increasing its efficiency. According to the head of the region, the expected total volume of water that will be accumulated thanks to the new facilities will amount to 180 million cubic meters.
“After the implementation of these projects, 31 thousand hectares of new irrigated land will be put into circulation, and the volume of collected water will amount to 180 million cubic meters,” Berik Uali said.
The program also includes the repair of 181 kilometers of main canals. It is expected that the modernization of the irrigation network will directly affect agricultural productivity. Crop yields are projected to increase from the current 16 centners per hectare to 27 centners, which will be a significant step in strengthening food security in the region.
Additional opportunities for farmers will be opened by the use of the hydropotential of the Irtysh River. Due to this resource, the area of irrigated land in the region is planned to be expanded by another 70 thousand hectares. Thus, the total area of irrigated lands will reach 214 thousand hectares.
Special attention in the project is paid to the introduction of modern technologies. The area of land where water–saving irrigation methods are used will increase more than six times – from 13.9 thousand to 88.2 thousand hectares. This step will not only increase yields, but also ensure the rational use of water resources.
