Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan discussed joint use of Amu Darya

The delegation of the Ministry of Water Resources of Uzbekistan visited Turkmenistan to discuss bilateral cooperation in the field of water resources management.

Officials of both countries met in Turkmenabad to address key issues, including maintenance and modernization of water infrastructure, flood prevention, strengthening river banks and efficient use of water, the “Center.Asia” reports.

During the discussions, the parties reaffirmed their commitment to the implementation of the agreements reached during the fourth Uzbek-Turkmen intergovernmental meeting on water resources management. They agreed to cooperate in the implementation of hydraulic engineering projects aimed at minimizing water losses in the Amu Darya River and optimizing the use of resources.

The two countries also plan to conduct joint research on common water bodies, exchange experience in the field of water-saving technologies and digital management systems, and expand training programs for water resource management specialists.

During the visit, the Uzbek delegation inspected the Tuyamuyun hydroelectric complex, where they discussed possible improvements in its operation.

Meanwhile, on the World Day of Action for the Protection of Rivers, environmental organizations expressed concern about the growing threats to the rivers and lakes of Central Asia. Organizations such as Rivers without Borders and Friends of the Earth US have called on international financial institutions to reconsider financing hydropower projects in the region.
