The capacity of the Rogun Dam under construction will be increased by 180 MW
The installed capacity of the Rogun Dam after the full completion of its construction will be 3,780 megawatts (MW), according to JSC “Rogun Dam. It is noted that the installed capacity of each of the six hydroelectric units of this station will be 630 MW.
“This will produce an average of 14,400 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity per year,” the report emphasizes.
Recall that in 2024, electricity production by all stations in Tajikistan amounted to 22,428 gigawatt-hours.
Earlier it was expected that the installed capacity of the Rogun Dam after its complete completion will be 3600 MW. Six hydroelectric units with a capacity of 600 MW with radial-axial turbines will be installed in the Dam building.
Further construction of the Rogun Dam will be carried out in two phases:
— by 2028, the dam will reach a height of 1,185 meters above sea level, with an installed capacity of 1,660 MW (400 MW for blocks 5/6, 1260 MW for blocks 3/4);
— By 2035, the dam will reach a height of 1,300 meters above sea level; an installed capacity of 3,780 MW (630 MW in all six blocks).
“The first phase, the cost of which is estimated at $3.39 billion, is financed by ADB, AIIB, EIB, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, the OPEC Fund for International Development, the Saudi Development Fund and other financing organizations,” the report emphasizes.
The complete completion of the station is estimated at about $ 6.3 billion.
Currently, the first two units of the Rogun Dam are operating at low power. According to the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Tatarstan, in 2024, these units produced over 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, which amounted to about 5.5% of the total electricity generation in the country last year.
According to official data, more than 40 billion somoni (about $ 4 billion) was allocated for the completion of Rogun, including through the sale of shares of OJSC Rogun Dam (890 million somoni), Eurobonds ($500 million), and the rest – at the expense of the state budget.
