The construction of a small hydroelectric power station led to flooding in the Andijan region
The erosion of the dam occurred during the construction of a small hydroelectric power station on the South Ferghana main Canal in Uzbekistan. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the republic, about 100 houses were flooded as a result of the incident.
The Ministry of Water Resources of Uzbekistan has confirmed that the flood in the Andijan region occurred as a result of the erosion of the dam in the upper reaches of the South Ferghana main canal. A small hydroelectric power station is being built there to provide water to social institutions and agricultural lands of the Andijan and Ferghana regions, as well as border areas of Kyrgyzstan.
Residents of the mahallas of the Buwayda district of the Andijan region who suffered as a result of flooding will receive appropriate compensation. This was reported by Uzbekhydroenergo JSC.
The company recalled that the construction of the SFK-3 small hydroelectric power station on the South Ferghana Canal is being carried out in accordance with the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan No. VM-800 dated December 31, 2021. The project is being implemented at the expense of the Russian financial institution MPR, and the construction work is carried out by the Russian company Energosila on a turnkey basis.
The design capacity of the HPP is 6.9 megawatts, with an annual electricity production of up to 33 million kilowatt-hours. As part of the project, a water-holding facility was built to regulate the supply of water during the growing season. To this end, the main stream was temporarily redirected via a bypass channel.
However, the actual water consumption in the bypass channel exceeded the calculated figures: instead of the envisaged 60 cubic meters per second, the volume reached 70 cubic meters, which caused erosion of the right bank of the South Ferghana Canal.
As emphasized in the message, all necessary measures are currently being taken to eliminate the consequences of the emergency. Repair and restoration work is carried out in an accelerated manner with the involvement of the necessary equipment and working resources.
It is expected that by 14:00 on May 9 of this year the channel will be fully restored and put into normal operation.
Uzbekhydroenergo JSC assured that residents whose houses and homesteads were damaged as a result of flooding will be provided with compensation for damage.
According to Uzhydromet, a total of 560 households were affected by the flood.
