Rockfall Blocks Access to Major Kyrgyzstan Hydropower Plant

A rockfall occurred yesterday on the access road leading to the Toktogul Hydroelectric Power Station (HPS) cascade in Kyrgyzstan. The strategically important route was completely blocked after approximately 2,500 cubic meters of rock and soil collapsed onto the roadway from an adjacent slope, disrupting access essential for the power station’s operations.
JSC Electric Stations dispatched response teams to the site to clear the debris and restore traffic. A 25-person emergency and recovery crew from the Toktogul HPS Cascade–a branch of JSC Electric Stations–was deployed to the location. The clearance operation is supported by four units of special engineering equipment.
By the evening of the same day, crews had cleared one lane of the road. This allowed for the resumption of traffic in a single-lane, alternating flow, which partially restored access to the hydropower generation facilities and eased the immediate blockade.
Work to complete the final clearance of the roadway is ongoing. Specialists are tasked with removing the remaining debris from the second lane and will conduct an inspection of the slope to assess the risk of further collapses. The full restoration of access is considered a priority for maintaining the safety and normal operation of the energy facility.
