Kyrgyzstan Approves Small Hydropower Projects in Chui Region

The government of Kyrgyzstan has concluded an investment agreement for the construction of new small hydropower plants in the Chui region. The project, valued at up to 2.3 billion soms, involves building generating facilities on the Sokuluk River and its tributaries. This initiative aligns with the strategy of Bishkek to reduce the national energy deficit through the development of small hydropower and the attraction of private capital into infrastructure projects.

The document was signed in the capital of the republic. Ravshanbek Sabirov, head of the National Investment Agency, signed on behalf of the Cabinet of Ministers, while Nurbek Chiltenov, general director of the Sokuluk HPP-3 company, signed on behalf of the investor. The agreement establishes a phased construction plan in the Sokuluk district.

During the first phase, the company is obligated to build and commission two stations – Sokuluk HPP-3 and Tuyuk HPP. Their combined installed capacity is expected to reach 15.6 megawatts. The financial investment for this initial stage is estimated at 1.5 billion soms.

In the future, the parties will consider expanding the hydropower cascade by harnessing the potential of the Akpay and Ashutor mountain rivers. If this scenario is realized, the total capacity of the new facilities will reach 21 megawatts, and the combined capital investment will increase to 2.3 billion soms.
