Second Phase of Afghanistan’s Qosh Tepa Canal Nears Completion

Afghan authorities are entering the final stage of construction on the second phase of the Qosh Tepa irrigation canal. Earthworks on this specific section have reached 98 percent completion. The reinforcement of the canal banks is proceeding concurrently – the readiness of these slopes is currently evaluated at 90.5 percent.

The development of associated infrastructure along the waterway is also nearing its conclusion. Twenty-five crossing points and hydro-technical hubs designed to monitor and control water levels are actively being constructed along the canal route. Contractors anticipate bringing these facilities into operation shortly.

The Qosh Tepa project remains one of the most extensive infrastructure initiatives within Afghanistan. The operationalization of this hydraulic structure will redirect water flows from the Amu Darya river to irrigate arid territories in the north of the country. This newly established irrigation system is intended to stimulate domestic agriculture and reorganize water resource distribution throughout the region.
