The project of construction of Kambar-Ata HPP-1 may become cheaper

Calculations show that the cost of the Kambar-Ata HPP-1 construction project in Kyrgyzstan may turn out to be lower than the announced 5-6 billion US dollars:

Kambar-Ata HPP-1 is not just a new station, it is the way to our energy independence, economic development and the opening of new opportunities for the people, said the head of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic Akylbek Japarov.

He noted that the Kambar-Ata HPP construction project is supported by the World Bank.

“Calculations show that the cost of the project will be lower than the expected amount (before that, the amount of $5—$6 billion was announced). This hydroelectric power station will become an important tool for effective water resources management in Central Asia in the context of environmental water crises expected in the future,” Zhaparov stressed.

The head of the Cabinet of Ministers emphasized that the republic was able to find initial funds for the China —Kyrgyzstan—Uzbekistan railway and the Kambar-Ata HPP and were able to allocate billions for the development of a feasibility study.

“This proves to the world financial institutions and other countries that Kyrgyzstan is able to finance major projects and has the will to implement them. Therefore, we have partners for the construction of the Kambar-Ata HPP-1,” the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan added.

Speaking about the work done and upcoming work in the energy sector, Akylbek Japarov noted that in 2024 small hydroelectric power plants with a capacity of 48.3 MW were commissioned, the CASA-1000 project was completed, and projects for the construction of solar and wind power plants and the reconstruction of the Toktogul hydroelectric power station are continuing.

“Small hydroelectric power plants have been commissioned: Bala-Saruu, Ysyk-Ata-1, Kainama, Kok-Art, Isfayram-1, Kurak-Tektir and others. Currently, there are 33 small hydropower plants with a total capacity of 121.5 MW operating in the country. Six more small HPPs will be commissioned by the end of the year. Reconstruction of Toktogul HPP by the end of 2025 will increase capacity by an additional 240 MW. In addition, the capacity of the Kambar-Ata HPP-2 will be increased by 120 MW by 2028, and the capacity of the Uch-Korgon HPP, which is now 180 MW, will increase to 216 MW (+36) by 2027,” he concluded.
