Tajikistan offers ADB to invest $500 million in Rogun Dam
A meeting was held in Dushanbe between the Minister of Economic Development and Trade of Tajikistan Zavkizoda Zavki Amin and the head of the representative office of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in the Republic of Ko Sakamoto. The parties focused on deepening partnership and attracting investments in strategically important infrastructure projects for Tajikistan.
The Minister stressed that sustainable economic development, expansion of international cooperation and attraction of foreign investments are the priorities of the policy pursued under the leadership of President Emomali Rahmon. ADB, in turn, is positioned as one of the key and proven partners of Tajikistan in the international arena.
The Asian Development Bank has already invested about $ 2.6 billion in Tajikistan’s economy, and the bank’s current portfolio of projects in the country is estimated at $947 million. These figures clearly demonstrate the scale and importance of cooperation for both sides.
During the talks, special attention was paid to the construction of the Rogun Dam, a flagship project that, according to officials, is of strategic importance for energy independence and future economic prosperity of Tajikistan. The Minister of Economic Development and Trade appealed to ADB to step up its participation in financing this ambitious project, suggesting that the bank consider allocating $500 million to support it.
In addition to the Rogun Dam, the parties discussed ADB’s potential participation in the development and financing of two other important programs: the Medium-term Development Program of Tajikistan for 2026-2030 and the Export Development Program for the same period. The implementation of these programs is designed to ensure long-term economic stability, economic diversification and strengthening of Tajikistan’s position in the world market.
The head of the ADB representative office, Ko Sakamoto, in turn, expressed support for the initiatives proposed by the Tajik side and praised the current macroeconomic indicators of the country. He stressed that the results achieved form a solid foundation for further progress and sustainable development of Tajikistan. At the end of the meeting, the parties expressed their mutual readiness to continue close cooperation and implement the planned plans.
