The UN Development Program will help build new reservoirs in Kazakhstan

Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan Nurzhan Nurzhigitov held a meeting with the Permanent Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the country Katarzhina Vav’erniya, where issues of cooperation in the water industry were discussed, the press service of the Ministry reports.

The focus was on the project “Development of climate-sustainable water resources”, which is funded by the Islamic Development Bank. Its first phase includes the construction of four new reservoirs, the reconstruction of four more existing ones, as well as the modernization of 115 irrigation canals.

To improve the efficiency of the project, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan, together with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), attracted UNDP as an international consultant in July this year. The Ministry’s specialists and UNDP experts have already discussed the application of scientific approaches and coordination of actions of all participants in the work.

It is expected that the participation of UNDP will make it possible to bring the implementation of the project to a new level and achieve the target indicators laid down in the Concept of Development of the Water Resources Management system of Kazakhstan. For the successful launch of the project, the regulatory framework was updated, the necessary institutional structures were created and funding was provided.

Earlier, the Islamic Development Bank also held training seminars in Astana for Kazakhstani specialists on procurement, financial management, integrity and ethics for the quality implementation of projects in the water sector.
