Chinese Firm to Upgrade Hydropower Plants in Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan and China have finalized agreements to modernize three hydroelectric power plants in the Tashkent region. The state-owned Uzbekhydroenergo signed the contracts with Chinese energy company TBEA Co., Ltd. for the comprehensive upgrade of HPP-19, HPP-22, and HPP-23. These plants are part of the Lower Bozsu hydropower cascade, and the project will be executed under an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) turnkey contract.

TBEA Co., Ltd. was selected following an open tender, with its proposal deemed optimal for its use of advanced technologies and international project experience. The modernization will involve updating the plants’ control systems and technological equipment to improve operational reliability and safety. The upgrades will increase the combined installed capacity of the three facilities from 27.4 to 32.4 megawatts – a gain of 5 megawatts.

Upon completion, the upgraded plants are projected to generate 52.8 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, sufficient to power more than 21,000 households. The project is also expected to result in annual savings of 17 million cubic meters of natural gas and over 40,000 tonnes of coal.
