The strategic cascade of HPPs in the east of Kazakhstan will be handed over to private owners

The cascade of hydroelectric power stations (HPPs) in the East Kazakhstan region is to be included in the number of strategic facilities transferred to private owners, the correspondent of the KazTAG agency reports.

“In the list of water facilities of special strategic importance, including those that can be leased and trust management (…): paragraph 5 should be supplemented with subparagraph 5) of the following content: “5) cascade of hydroelectric power plants on the Uba River in the East Kazakhstan region,” the draft government resolution says.

The explanatory note to the document contains the expected socio-economic, legal and (or) other consequences in the event of the adoption of the draft, as well as the impact of the provisions of the draft on ensuring national security.

“The adoption of the project will ensure: reliable control of flood waters, which will significantly reduce flood risks and ensure the protection of territories and settlements in the region; the formation of a complex of reservoirs with a total capacity of up to 500 million cubic meters to stabilize water supply to the population and industrial facilities; the creation of conditions for irrigation of over 3 thousand hectares of agricultural land, which will contribute to the development of the agricultural sector in the region; hydroelectric power plants will provide up to 1831 GWh of environmentally friendly electricity per year, which will contribute to the achievement of national sustainable development goals,” the developers explained.
